La prima volta che Terry Martin entrò in acqua con una tavola fatta da sè fu nel 1952, all'età di 14 anni. Quella tavola era un 10' in balsa e fu comprata da un lifeguard di Ocean Beach che se ne innamorò dopo averla provata su appena due onde. “He paddled back to me and told me he wouldn’t be giving the board back. He told me, I’ll tell you what, I’ll give you your board back when you make me one."
Da quel giorno, per sessant'anni, Terry Martin ha messo le mani su più di 80 mila pani diventando uno degli shaper più conosciuti e stimati del pianeta.
